Chapter 1-2
Chapter 1
The prison doors is all that sticks out on chapter one. It
kind of confused me because I was like who goes there? And why do they go
there? Like they were just talking about how it looked and what people wore and
then it sort of ventured off into talking about this certain black flower and
then about the rosebush. It really confused me. Like I get that the narrator
was trying to be descriptive so that we as the readers can understand more with
a mental picture but I don’t feel as though as that was needed. Like I feel as
though it was all extra stuff that we could’ve learned later on in the story.
Chapter 2
So this seems to introduce
religion. What threw me off is why are the puritans, the Quakers, an
Antinomian, heterodox religionists and idle or vagrant Indian being kind of
kicked out of the town. They also bring up how people such as children that
were handed over and a sluggish bond-servant got whippings at the whipping
post. I’m kind of not surprised because back then they did give whippings to
the disobedient. People also seemed to be super scared of the bearded
physiognomies, they most definitely didn’t like witches what so ever. They
publicly punished people. I never knew back then they did that I thought it was
like indoors or something but what I want to know is what made certain people
get whopping’s at the whipping post in homes or closed areas while others got
them when being surrounded by the public. Mocking others got you punished, laughing
at others got you punished but somewhere as bad as death. Was it ever that
serious? Going back to page 48 the women who were in prison had to give up
their kids, I know they really had no choice but to whom did they have to give
their kids up to? Who is the Hester Prynne’s?
Well Mrs. Hester is talked about with a
certain mark on her that she’s so bold to walk around town with. The women of
the town feel angry. They all as a community
feel like anything on your clothing or on you is disrespect, so they
kind of urge that she take it off but don’t really tell her. She has brought
shame to everyone and they are so cruel to say she deserves death. I personally
don’t feel like she’s bringing shame I mean that doesn’t determine how good of
a wife or mother she is based on a
letter shown on her clothing. So wait was Mrs. Hester not in prison because she
still has her child and is now being judged and wanted dead and all this other
stuff? So, A was known as the SCARLET
LETTER. The townspeople were also surprised because they thought that her
attitude would be scared and ashamed but she came up proud. So im guessing she
was the kings mistress. Therefore she kept her baby and nobody could really do
anything to her call her names and talk about her behind her back. But shes on
her way to get her so called punishment.
The word scaffold keeps popping up, what does it mean.
She’s a fighter because being called all those names and
then already having a bright red colored A which made her stand out more would
have made me go crazy and took in it off but she made sure she realized it was
real and she wasn’t backing down!
